Ceresana, a research group headquartered in Germany, stated that thermoplastic elastomers are increasingly replacing other plastic materials. TPE is mainly used in the automotive industry, but new application areas are constantly emerging. The company stated that TPE sales reached $16.7 billion in 2014. It is predicted that by 2022, this number will increase by 4.7% annually. China, the United States, Japan, and Germany are the four major TPE consuming countries, accounting for a total of 63% of the global TPE demand in 2014. It is predicted that the fastest growing demand for TPE will be in South America and the Asia Pacific region, especially in China, India, and Brazil. TPE consumption in North America and Western Europe will also maintain an annual growth rate of 2%. The company stated that the growth is particularly evident in Asia, with multiple new manufacturers entering the market. Over the past eight years, China's TPE production has increased by 60000 tons.
The research group emphasized in the report that the global automotive industry accounts for about 40% of the total consumption of TPE products. Therefore, the development of the automotive industry brings benefits to the growth of TPE. The demand for TPE will also increase in other industries, such as machine construction and medical technology.
